Preface

Building on the foundation laid in the machine assembly and installation training, this course dives into the nuanced skill of identifying and controlling component failure. We've found that many machinery problems experienced on a daily basis are unrelated to issues of precise alignment or balance. This calls for a craft-centric, analytical approach towards understanding these problems and their potential solutions. This session aims to enrich craftsmen with a holistic understanding of how machinery components like bearings, lubrication systems, couplings, and seals operate, fail, and can be maintained. Through a blend of theoretical knowledge and hands-on exercises, attendees are prepared to tackle real-world challenges in their work environments.

Objectives

  1. Component Identification and Control: Begin with a comprehensive understanding of how to disassemble failed machines, systematically document symptoms of failures, and use this information to pinpoint the root causes.
  2. Deep Dive into Bearings: Acquire practical knowledge on different bearing applications, familiarize oneself with identification methods, master removal/installation techniques, and interpret fit charts effectively.
  3. Essentials of Lubrication: Delve into lubrication best practices, from understanding the selection criteria, properties, and types of lubricants, to mastering housing and delivery systems. Special attention will be given to lubrication practices for smaller plant machines, which form the bulk of asset bases in most establishments.
  4. Power Transmission Mastery: Grasp the foundational concepts surrounding the selection, installation, inspection, and lubrication of commonly used couplings in the industry.
  5. Introduction to Shaft Sealing Systems: Equip oneself with knowledge about various shaft sealing systems, enabling better recognition of, and the ability to field-correct, typical failure modes.
